The House

Maison Varenne

Two shores, one standard.

A Varenne leather jacket
is not worn for a season.
It is kept.

It softens, takes on a patina and ends up looking like you. Maison Varenne, a house of men’s leather jackets, was born in Marseille for this idea, and this idea alone.

Traditional Bab Debbagh tanneries in Marrakech, with lime and dye pits

I

Origins: Marrakech and the art of Moroccan leather

Our story begins in Marrakech, in the Bab Debbagh quarter, the tanners’ gate. There, in the tanneries known as Dar Dbagh, the house of the tanner, hides have been worked for centuries like nowhere else. Pits of lime and dye line up under the open sky, and the gestures are passed down from father to son.

Our hides are tanned in Morocco, in Marrakech in particular, true to these age-old gestures. Every hide carries this knowledge.

In Morocco, leather is not just another material. It is a heritage, a noble craft, a source of pride. Babouches, saddles, bookbinding, leather goods: the Moroccan artisan has always known how to turn a hide into an object that lasts a lifetime.

This is the culture Maison Varenne carries within it. We did not borrow it: it is part of who we are.

The material: lambskin, cowhide and suede

Genuine leather, exclusively. Drum-dyed lambskin for its suppleness and drape, cowhide for its structure, suede for its depth.

Each hide is chosen one by one, for its grain and its hand. Fine leather never sets: it takes the shape of the shoulders and keeps the memory of every gesture. To keep it that way, follow our guide to caring for your leather jacket. To tell the materials apart, read our article lambskin, cowhide: how to recognise leathers.

Craftsmanship: handmade leather jackets

Our leather jackets are born in our workshop in Morocco, in the hands of experienced leather artisans, heirs to this ancient know-how.

Everything there is done by hand. The artisan first reads the hide: its direction, its nuances and its finest areas. Then comes the cutting, piece by piece, so that the grain flows from one panel to the next. Assembly follows, then the seams, placed with a precision only experience can give. The finishing is reworked by hand down to the last detail.

Nothing is rushed. A jacket takes the time it needs to fall just right. That time is what you wear.

Marseille, the other shore

On the other shore lies Marseille. The city has always looked south. Its port has seen merchants, fabrics, leathers and people cross between both sides of the sea. Marseille is a city of crossings and character.

Our hides are tanned in Morocco and our jackets are made by hand in our workshop. Each style is then designed, refined and approved in Marseille.

Maison Varenne was born of this bond. On one side, the hand and memory of Morocco. On the other, the eye of Marseille. Between the two, the Mediterranean, which does not divide but connects, and an elegance that is honest, understated and never ostentatious.

V

Rarity: limited editions

Each style exists in a limited edition, colour by colour. Once a series sells out, it does not always return.

The final touch

Every piece leaves Marseille in the black Varenne box, wrapped in tissue paper, with the woven label sewn inside.
